Inherit the Wind on Broadway: An Unforgettable Broadway Event

JEROME LAWRENCE AND ROBERT E. LEE (Authors), whose collaboration spanned more than fifty years, were among the most prolific playwriting teams in the American theatre. In addition to Pulitzer-nominated Inherit the Wind, their major stage works include Auntie Mame, the books for the musicals Mame and Dear World, The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail, The Gang's All Here, and First Monday in October. They won two Peabody Awards for Distinguished Achievement in Broadcasting and the American Theatre Association Lifetime Achievement Award. In 1990, they became members of the College of Fellows of the American Theatre at the Kennedy Center and were inducted into the National Theatre Hall of Fame. The Lawrence and Lee Theatre Research Institute was established at Ohio State University in 1986. Dedicated teachers of playwriting, they communicated to their students a passionate belief that the theatre must be a forum for ideas and issues of social significance.

DOUG HUGHES (Director), is an associate artist at Roundabout Theatre Company, where his most recent production is Patrick Marber's Howard Katz. He is also the Resident Director at MCC Theater, where he has directed Last Easter, Frozen and The Grey Zone (1996 Obie Award for Direction). For his work on Frozen, Hughes received Tony Award, Outer Critics Circle and Lortel nominations. Other recent work in New York includes Richard Greenberg's The House in Town for Lincoln Center Theater; Flesh and Blood (Callaway Award for Best Direction) at NYTW; Othello at the Public; John Guare's Lake Hollywood at Signature and Doubt for Manhattan Theatre Club. For his work on Doubt, Hughes won the 2005 Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play. He also won the Lucille Lortel, Outer Critics, Drama Desk and Callaway Awards for the same production. In May 2005, Hughes received an Obie Award for Sustained Excellence.

MARK SCHNEIDER (Associate Director), is a Drama League Directing Fellow and member of the Lincoln Center Directors Lab. Since 2002, he has collaborated extensively with Doug Hughes. Broadway: Doubt, A Touch of the Poet and A Naked Girl on the Appian Way.

SANTO LOQUASTO (Set & Costume Designer), designer for theatre, film, dance and opera has won 3 Tony Awards and has been nominated 14 times. He has collaborated with Woody Allen on 24 films, including costume design for Zelig, and production design for Radio Days and Bullets Over Broadway for which he received Academy Award nominations. Recent designs include Three Days of Rain, Shining City, Glengarry Glen Ross, Prelude to a Kiss and Suddenly Last Summer. He received the 2006 Governor's Award for the Arts in Pennsylvania and was inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame in 2004.

His work has won or been nominated for Oscars, Emmys, Tonys and Golden Globes. Avnet most recently directed Al Pacino in 88 MINUTES, and Debra Messing, Judy Davis and Joe Mantegna in The Starter Wife. He has also been involved as a producer on Spamalot, The Pillowman and The History Boys.

RALPH GUILD (Producer), began producing in 2005, with Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Woman in White. In 2006, Mr. Guild was a producer of acclaimed The History Boys. He is also founder and Chairman of Interep, a media representation firm specializing in radio. He is a member of the Broadcasting Hall of Fame and a trustee of the Museum of Television and Radio. Mr. Guild and his wife Calla have 5 children and 16 grandchildren.

ROY FURMAN (Producer), is currently represented on Broadway by The Color Purple and Tony Award winning Best Musical Spamalot, and later in the season will co-produce Coram Boy and the musical Legally Blonde. Other recent productions include Best Play Tony winner The History Boys, The Wedding Singer, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, The Pillowman, Democracy and The Odd Couple. He also produced multiple Tony Award winner Fortune's Fool, Sly Fox, and Best Musical Fosse. Mr. Furman co-founded the investment firm Furman Selz and is currently Vice Chairman of Jefferies & Company and chairman of Jefferies Capital Partners, its private equity division. He is Vice Chairman of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Chairman Emeritus of the Film Society of Lincoln Center and Vice President of the New York City Opera.

DEBRA BLACK (Producer), serves on the boards of The Public Theater, Lincoln Center Theater and she is Vice-Chairman of the New York State Council on the Arts. He and his wife created and produced the program American Voices 2000 in Berlin, Germany. He is a managing director of the Metropolitan Opera and a trustee of the National Trust for the Humanities.

NANCY ELLISON ROLLNICK (Producer), is primarily known as a photojournalist and portrait photographer. Her subjects have ranged from world leaders to icons of popular culture. Shown by the Mary Boone Gallery, her work has been honored by World Press Photo. In Grand Style: The Glory of the Metropolitan Opera is her most recent publication. Ellison was co-producer of 3 Penny Opera, starring Sting, her first Broadway venture. Her Off-Broadway credit was as producer on Adult Entertainment.

STEPHANIE P. McCLELLAND (Producer). Founder, Green Curtain Productions (GCP).
